That said.. the suggestion that I should sprinkle my morning oatmeal (which I don’t eat) with flaxseed and bee pollen was initially greeted with a “Yeah, right. F’king hippies”. Upon further reflection and reading I’ve changed my mind about some of it.
What I’ve read tells me that I (and most of America) is suffering from too much sugar, too much seed-based food, too much Omega-6 fats and too little Omega-3s.
I’ve dealt with the sugar and seed-based foods by eliminating sodas and cutting (way) back on sugary and refined foods (mostly through cooking my own food).
I’ve dealt with too much Omega-6s by changing the oils I use (Got rid of Canola and changed to Olive Oil) and eliminating industrial foods (foods grown “industrially” are high in Omega-6s).
Omega-3s turned out to be a challenge. Omega-3s are essential oils. That is, your body cannot create these oils so you have to get them through the things you eat. There are 3 of them (and they each have letters and I’ll be damned if I can remember their letters). One is found in ground flax seeds and the other two in fish.
I’ve started eating fish at least once a week (wild salmon once a month, farmed catfish and scallops) and I’m taking 1 tablespoon of fish oil in the mornings. Susan Dopart, a nutritionist I trust who wrote A Recipe for Life by the Doctor’s Dietitian
Finally, I gave in and started adding 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed to my yogurt in the morning. It needs to be ground because otherwise the seeds will pass right through your system and your body won’t be able to extract the Omega3s.
The jury’s still out on bee pollen. Although Tosca suggests it.. I really don’t know what for..unless it’s just to make me look like a hippy tree-hugger.
