Friday Five

1. Work/Programming
About a month ago in a meeting a vendor said that their code was running slowly because our code had some kind of issue and was loading their code slowly. Since wasn’t aware of their code running slow.. and I don’t make it a habit to yell at vendors in meetings I didn’t contradict them and instead said I’d look into it.

I did look into it and found that our way of doing that piece of code differed only slightly from Google’s way of doing that piece of code (ie, industry standard) so I fiddled our bit of code and changed it to be the same as Google’s way of doing it. Then I benchmarked the old code against the new code and found the speed difference imperceptible. Ie, as far as I can tell the change made absolutely no difference to the speed with with the code loaded/rendered. BUT I made the change to our code anyway so that we could be inline with industry standard. This change is supposed to go live next week.

Yes.. it’s an exciting life I live.

2. Home
Well so that was quick. As I mentioned in the last Friday Five, our house is for sale for $89k. Saturday, the 19th, we had our first open house. On Tuesday the 21st we received our first offer. $85k cash. On Wednesday evening we gave the realtor the verbal ok to accept the offer and signed all the paperwork. Because this is a short sale both the first and second mortgage holders have to agree to the sale. The realtor sent the offer to BofA (the first mortgage holder). Yesterday (2/29) I received an email informing me that BofA made a counter offer asking $89k and offering Citibank (the second mortgage holder) $4k to agree to the sale. So now we wait.

3. Health
Last week I didn’t run. I want to blame it on my back hurting.. but really it was a big old ball of “just stay in bed, it’s warm here and safe” stress. With the house stuff + jury duty I just didn’t feel like it. This week I haven’t run either.. that said, this week I -can- blame it on my back hurting. Hurting like a bully punched me in the back-left hip, knocked me down and took my lunch money.

So, I -finally- made time to read the Egoscue book.. and then tonight I finally made it through the introductory chapters and on to the chapter about “Hips” and why they hurt. I did one of the stretches when I got home from work and suddenly my back is feeling much better. I’m gobsmacked. No really.. my hip/back hurt like “omg I’m going to die” so I did one of the 4 stretches the book would have me do.. and the pain went from an 8 to a 3.

So the plan is to spend the rest of this week doing the stretches in the Hip chapter.. and then if all is well move on to the “here’s how you stretch for the rest of your life to stay healthy”. Booya to the quick fix.

Unfortunately weight, for me, isn’t a quick fix. I continue to be a champ at maintaining.

My breakfast smoothies have been going well. I’m doing 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk + 1/2 cup greek yogurt + 2 scoops protein powder + 1 Tbsp fiber + 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa. It’s actually pretty tasty. I tried adding peanut butter to it.. but my current peanut butter is crunchy.. and I’m a bit turned of by big bits of peanuts at the bottom of my smoothie. I may try it again after I get smooth peanut butter. Anyway, that mix satisfies me until almost exactly lunch. This week I’ve been a total champ about having a nice lean protein paired with some veggies. Sadly dinner has been a different story.

Lately we’ve been doing way too much eating out. and, even worse, I’ve been not making good choice when we eat out… you know, getting raviolis in cream sauce instead of broiled fish… eating the whole entre. I know, I know. I’m working to fix that.

4. SCA/Projects
Last weekend Fearghus won the Golden Rivers Championship making us the Lord and Lady of Golden Rivers. I think it will be a HUGE amount of fun and I’m looking forward to the year in this role.. you know.. unless someone wins Coronet. We’ll see.

I’m about 1/2 way done with Fearghus’ new banner. It’s going to be mighty spiff if you ask me. I think the banner is the only project I -have- to finish before March Crown… though I’d like to get a black wool Kentish overcoat made for myself.

Two weeks after crown is Gaston Phebus. OMG.. lots to do for that. I need to make a 15th century tunic and chausses for Fearghus and some kind of dress for me. That and I’m fairly certain I promise a 15th century tunic to Bob as well. Busy busy busy.

I’m pleased to announce that Fearghus and I have finally chosen a year. We will be getting married August 31, 2013 on my parent’s farm in Montana. Save the date and invitations to come. Please be sure to give me your address if you’d like an invitation.
