Friday Five

1. Work/Programming
HA! We had a meeting with the vendor (the one who said our code was making their code run slow) and I told them I was having trouble reproducing the issue. If I can’t reproduce the problem I can’t fix it. They hemmed and they hawed.. and then finally they admitted that they can’t reproduce the problem either. So yeah for that.. the only bad thing is that back in the original meeting one of our muck-y-mucks heard the vendor accuse us of causing the slowdown.. and since I didn’t immediately deny that the code might be slow she believe the vendor.. and so has mentioned on several occasions that we need to improve our code.. because it’s slow. You know.. that slowness that I could never recreate. So yeah.. she believed them… and continues to parrot what they said about it being slow.. to other executives and management.. and now I can’t say “yes I fixed the slowdown”.. because frankly I don’t think there was a slowdown to begin with.

Meh.

2. Home
Whoosh! So we had an offer at $85k.. and then that offer was cancelled(they decided the house was too small. OF COURSE it’s too small.. that’s why it’s 1/2 the cost of other 2 bedroom homes in the neighborhood you ignorant waste of currency). So we put the house back up on the market.. for about a day, had three showings.. and got another offer. So we’re back to where we were last week. Only this time the offer is for $108k which is above the bank’s asking price of $89k. The realtor is submitting it to the banks. Just this morning I completed and got notarized and faxed the last of the paperwork requested by the second bank. So yeah.. back to waiting.

On the plus side my house is now the cleanest it’s ever been. Good thing too. We have a friend who is flying in from Pennsylvania to stay with us for a week and Vigdis and Rockstar are coming into town at the end of next week to stay with us Thurs-Sat. I totally have somewhere for everyone to sleep.. and I’m not embarrassed at all for them to see my house. It’s a interesting feeling.

Putting stuff into storage made my house seem bigger.. and nicer. I kind of like it. In fact it’s caused me to wonder why I have all that stuff. Well “that stuff” is about 1/3 books (sci-fi/fantasy and cookbooks), 1/3 fabric and 1/3 crap.

I have 8 main storage tubs for fabric (3 linen, 3 wool, 1 fur/silk and 1 mixed fabrics). Normally this fits in a closet. I also have a bunch of rolls of fabric, 3 overflow tubs of fabric, 2 tubs of sewing paraphernalia and 2 HUGE tubs of scrap fabric. The goal before we move the fabric back into the next house is to get all of the fabric put into the 8 main storage tubs of fabric and cut the sewing paraphernalia down to a single tub. This means that I plan to sew from my stash until I can get rid of a lot of it.

3. Health
Today.. for the first time in nearly a year.. I forgot to pack my lunch. I know.. I was terribly surprised when I remembered that I’d forgotten. I have -no- idea what I’m going to have for lunch.. but I guess I will find something.. I mean I -am- in downtown San Francisco and as far as lunches go it’s a target rich environment. [updated to add: I had a small clam chowder and 1/2 sandwich from San Francisco Soup Company]

When I was in Vegas with Vigdis in February I got my first manicure. There was um.. powder and.. um.. the light thingy (give me a break.. it was my first time). After 3 weeks it was starting to look a bit shoddy so I stopped at a salon near my house to get it fixed. I was (and frankly still am) a bit puzzled about how this is supposed to work.

I get that I need to get them filled about every two weeks.. but is that for the rest of my life? Is there some point where I’m supposed to tell them to strip it all of and let my real nails rest? How often is that? For how long?
I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t alway keep your nails painted bacause it’s bad for your real nails. Is that still true?

They are awful purty.

Still not running.. but back is feeling better. Maybe next week.

4. SCA/Projects
I managed to make good progress on a bodice for a 15th century waisted kirtle for me. Initially I sewed it together at the front seam and just wiggled into it. The fit is ok.. but I have no idea why it is.. but when I fit a bodice out of cotton canvas.. and then make a copy of the pattern in linen.. the linen copy is always a lot looser than the cotton pattern was. I’ve decided that I need to take 0.75 inches off of each side of the front opening. That will allow me to lace it tight. In fact I think that when I put it on there will be a gap between the left and right side. This should go away after the linen warms up. When I add the lacing holes to the front I’ll roll the 0.75 inches to the inside and use it as reinforcement for the lacing holes and probably add a backing strip to the lacing.

Regardless.. I’m close to being able to work on the skirt. I may just leave the front as it is until I get done with the skirt. That way I can try it on, add the skirt and sleeves immediately without having to wait until I get lacing holes done. Hmm.. will need to think about that.

I’m making good progress on F’s banner. I’ve finished all of the embroidery on the main part and now just need to do the triquetra’s on the top part. To do that I need materials that we moved into the storage unit. I plan to grab that on Saturday morning. It’s looking v. gorgeous (pictures here when it’s done).

The plan tonight is to use some scrap fabric to cut out Herjolfsnes no.63. Herjolfsnes no.63 in a nice dark blue with some grey chausses is going to be F’s outfit for Beltane and Gaston Phebus. Ideally this is the project I hope to get most of the way done this weekend. Last night I found 18 buttons that I plan to use for the front opening.

5.
My mother called me earlier this week.. and among other things she asked me if I’d come up with any new plans for the wedding. I hadn’t.. it’s only been a week.. and frankly at the moment I’m kind of focused on dealing with the house. She told me that Dad has come up with some plans.

A long time ago I told them that I wanted to get married in a gazebo on their farm. Mom says Dad has found plans for “the most beautiful gazebo you have ever seen.” I’m quite giddy and can’t wait to see it.

Yes, I am having a destination wedding. Destination: Billings Montana. It’s not a glamorous as the virgin islands.. but I kinda like it. From Oakland CA it’s $140 round trip. So not terribly expensive. I really do hope that some of our friends will be able to make it to the wedding. Mom and Dad have offered camping space on the farm.. and the farm -is- only 90 minutes away from Yellowstone Park.. you know.. in case you wanted to bundle a vacation to Yellowstone in with hitting up our wedding. Just a thought 🙂
