Five Things

Friday Five: Non-dieting weight loss

1. Work/Programming
No change so far with my work situation. I’m employed through the end of the year.. and still up in the air as to what will happen next year.

Not much going on at work since I’ve been back. While I was gone I had a lot of emails that essential read “OMG THE WORLD IS ON FIRE WHAT WILL WE DO?” where my boss responded with “Monica’s back on the 9th, can this wait until then?” and they replied “Oh.. ok, we’ll wait”. I guess it’s good to be missed. Though I do wonder what they’re going to do when I go out on Maternity leave.. or even better what they’ll do after the end of the year if my job’s not extended.

Ok, I take it back.. there’s been a change in my work situation. Nothing official so far. My boss’s boss contacted me to let me know that a position has been funded that would report into {person who is on the same hierarchy level as boss’s boss}. Yesterday {person who is on the same hierarchy level as boss’s boss} stopped by my office to discuss the position particulars. It looks interesting.. and I’m interested.. Hopefully he’ll have official paperwork soon (nothing’s official until it’s all signed and in-hand).

2. Home
Slowly getting back to normal around here. Garage, Kitchen and dining room are in a bit of an uproar. Before the wedding we unloaded all of our camping stuff which normally lives in the trailer into the Garage.. and repacked the trailer with all of the stuff needed for the wedding. We just need to scrape up the energy to reverse this and repack the trailer. I have a feeling that’s going to happen today and/or tomorrow. Kitchen just needs a quick cleaning. For some reason suddenly we’re suddenly stacking things on the counters instead of filling the dishwasher. This needs to change. We have been slowly unloading wedding gifts into the Diningroom and I need to start putting stuff away. It’s our stuff now.. it should go into a permanent home. Ah well, I guess it’s just normal “we live here” stuff.

3. Health
The first time I visited the Doctor about my pregnancy (week 12 of the pregnancy) I was sternly warned that I was not allowed to diet.
A week before the wedding (week 28 of the pregnancy) my blood sugar test came back “troubling”. The doctor had me start testing my blood sugars daily and after a few days gave me a pill that would help my body better process the blood sugar overnight.
During the wedding a nurse called me weekly to monitor my blood sugar levels, advise on diet and adjust medication.
Last Wednesday I met with the dietitian who gave me a new restrictive food plan to follow to help keep my blood sugar “normal”.
Last Friday I chatted with the doctor and said “hey, if I follow your restrictive food plan I’m going to lose weight.” (it’s essentially the same plan I followed 2 yrs ago when I lost 60 lbs). Doctor said not to worry.**
Tuesday I met with the dietitian again to review my diet/blood sugars. Dietitian noted that I’d lost a pound since last week despite being mostly off the restrictive plan on Saturday and Sunday.

Um.. yeah.. I said that was going to happen.

On average, if I follow “the plan” exactly I lose about a pound a day. If I stray I either maintain from day to day.. or I gain 2 lbs (which are then lost as soon as I start following “the plan”).

** I wish Doctor had made it clear that I could follow this food plan (which I guess according to them is not a “diet”) starting 6 months ago.. I would be totally ok to finish up the pregnancy having gained -2 lbs.

Actually the doctor’s food plan includes a lot more wheat carbs than what I was doing previously.. but it’s this:
food_plan
Sample day:
8am Breakfast: soft-boiled egg on wheat toast with butter
10am Mid-morning snack: 12 multi-grain wheat thins and 1oz of cheese and 1 fresh peach
1pm Lunch: 1/2 can tuna mixed with mayo, mustard, katsup on 2 slices of wheat bread and 1 6oz yogurt
4pm Mid-afternoon snack: 1/2 cup cottage cheese and 1/8 cup almonds and 17 grapes
7pm Dinner: home made chilli with black beans served over polenta with a large glass of milk
10-11pm Midnight snack: 12 multi-grain wheat thins and 1oz of cheese

Even then, the dietitian was encouraging me to add more veggies so I don’t “get hungry”. Pshaw! as if.. I am totally not hungry eating just this. In fact I’m struggling to get in all those snacks. I *do* get cravings (I would kill for a cookie and a mocha).

My rules (from 2 yrs ago when I lost 60 lbs):
•Eat a mini-meal every two to three hours (4 to 5 small meals per day total) to keep blood sugar level and prevent hunger
•Eat proper portion sizes. If it’s 3 hours after your last meal and you’re not hungry, that means your last meal was too big. Eat less.
•Combine lean proteins and complex carbs at every meal.
•Avoid all over-processed and refined foods (especially sugar, white rice, and white flour)(and chicken fingers and fast food)
•Avoid trans fat, instead consume healthy fats
•Eliminate soda and other sugary juices and drinks
•Eliminate high-calorie, zero nutrient foods (i.e., junk food)
•Drink at least 8 cups of water every day

4. SCA/Projects
Many things to do and not enough hours in the day to do them all.

Project list:
1. Fearghus’ Queen’s Champion tabard (deadline Great Western War, Oct 9) Fabric is acquired, I just need to finalize the pattern, sew it together and the paint the symbol on it.
2. Cotehardie for Her Majesty Patricia (deadline October Crown, Oct 5). Still waiting for material to arrive.
3. Sylvie’s Anglo-Saxon tunic (deadline October Crown, Oct 5). This is in process. I’m hand-sewing it together on my bus commute. 1 sleeve is done and the other is half done.
4. Display items for Queen’s Artisan Display at October Crown (deadline October Crown, Oct 5). Need to finalize what I’m showing and figure out how I’m going to display it.
5. Bob’s Waffenrock (deadline 12th night, though sooner is better). Need to nail down exactly what he wants on the waffenrock, get measurements and start putting this together.
6. Chevrons for trim for Miach and Sciath (no deadline) Sooner is better than later and at this point I just need to finish it.
7. Baby garb. It would be nice to have baby garb before I have the baby.. but that may be wishful thinking.
8. Anglo-Saxon Fillet (no deadline). I’ve received materials for this in the mail.. but I can’t start on this until I finish the things above.. or at least 1-6.

5.
So it’s now “after the wedding”. So all the things that have gotten pushed off until “after the wedding” need to be dealt with.

Todo:
– Organize Baby clothes, figure out what we’re missing, figure out if someone’s going to organize a baby shower. Fill in missing items.
– Figure out what we need to pack for the trip to the hospital (yes, it’s ~2 months away, no, I don’t want to put it off until the last minute).
– Finalize maternity leave with work.. and (hopefully) job to continue in 2014.
– Figure out dentist and get appts.
– Get name officially changes and then update bills/DMV/etc with new name.
