Poppy cheese buns

Yesterday I found myself remembering some poppy seed cheese breads.

I remember buying a poppyseed cheese bread from … somewhere… it was made like a cinnamon bun.. a potato-y poppy seed bread all rolled up with cheese in between the layers of bread. The best buns were on the edges where you got the crispy bits of cheese that oozed out of the edge of the cheese bread and fried crisp on the baking sheet. I remember that the store sold the cheese bread as either poppy seed or jalapeƱo cheese breads. The poppy seed ones were the best.

I remember the smell of the bread and the fact that if you peeled the bread bun away layer by layer you ended up with the perfect center which was a yummy cylinder of cheese and bread bun middle. Perfect in the savory same way the center of a cinnamon bun is the best part.

I remember eating these with friends.. but I can’t remember which friends.. I can’t even remember how long ago I ate this.. it could be 5 years it could be 25 year ago.

Worst of all I don’t remember WHERE we bought these cheese breads. I just remember them and I want them again.

Food nostalgia is weird.

[edited to add: it turns out these were from “Specialty’s Bakery” and they no longer make them. article]
