I’ve decided I don’t like the ending of the movie Looper (I’d say I don’t like the movie.. but it has Bruce Willis.. and what’s not to love?).
***Spoilers Below***
Near the start of the movie we see a scene where old Bruce (oB) shows up to young Bruce (yB) without a hood and yB is so startled he forgets to shoot oB for a while.. and then oB spins around and yB shoots oB in the back hitting the gold bars so oB lives. oB hucks a gold bar at yB knocking yB out.
Shortly after that we see the same scene.. though this is implied to be the seen that oB saw. yB (who will be oB who spins) sees a man show up hooded. yB shoots the man. Then he finds out it’s oB and realizes that yB(who will be oB who spins)’s loop is now closed.. so he takes his amassed silver bars and goes to live a frivolous live squandering all his silver until he runs out.. and then turns into a bad guy.. until finally, luckily he runs into the love of his life. This oB receives a call giving him information about finding *The Rainmaker*. Shortly there after *Bad Guys who belong to the Rainmaker who is closing all loops* show up to close oB’s loop. While picking him up they also shoot and kill the love of his life. Which cause oB to fight back, being transported without a hood and allowing him to spin and live so he can go take out the Rainmaker.
In the end yB kills himself to prevent oB from killing Rainmaker’s mother.
The problem is that oB killing Mom doesn’t matter. oB who spins killed oB who didn’t spin. And yet still the Rainmaker grew up became a bad guy. So whether oB kills Mom or not doesn’t matter.
So yB suicided FOR NO REASON. His death prevented NOTHING.
So yeah.. I’ve decided I don’t like the ending.
*** A better ending ***
Let’s say that oB comes back and he ALWAYS spins.. ie, there is no instance of oB returning where he’s hooded. Therefore all timelines are intact. Then let’s say oB who spins throws the bar at yB, knocks him out and then leaves the gold bars for yB, writes a convincing letter to yB telling him to turn in the bars and pretend he killed oB and let oB go. Let’s say yB just does it. The only proof the Bad Guys requred to prove oB is dead is the gold bars. So yB turns in the gold bars and then starts to head off on his frivolous life only to find out the oB is hunting 5 year old kids.. and yB is too honorable to let that happen.. so then we have all of the rest of the movie.. up until they’re in that cane field.
At this point the timelines have a possibility to vary.
Interesting endings:
– yB shoots oB but oB also shoots Mom. Rainmaker runs off and grows up bad. Hey look, it’s 12 Monkey’s again.
– yB shoots self.. and Mom lives. Same ending as current movie.. but there’s a possibility that Rainmaker grows up good.
– yB shoots oB. Mom lives. yB stays to help Mom raise Rainmaker right… Mom and yB fall in love and live happily ever after on the farm. yB never goes bad.. but also never meets the asian love of his life. BUT he has saved her. The question here, is what happens in 30 years when they decide to close his loop?
